JFE Action May 2024

JFE Steel Corporation is Japan’s second-largest steel producer after Nippon Steel. They are reported to be in advanced discussions to acquire a 10% stake in Whitehaven Coal's Blackwater metallurgical coal mine. This is at odds with the stated objectives of their new CEO & President Yoshihisa Kitano to “shift to low emissions production”

It is likely that Whitehaven will want to finalise the sales of Blackwater stakes by the end of the financial year (June 24). We have a small window of opportunity to hopefully warn these steel companies not to partner with Whitehaven Coal.

We are organising a public protest outside the JFE Steel office in Brisbane to get photos and videos, and amplifying them on social media so that JFE Steel may take a more cautious approach to going into business with a company with such a terrible environmental and legal track record.

Let's make it clear to JFE that any business deals that expands the coal industry during the climate crisis is #RiskyBusiness and will face public opposition.
