Whitehaven's Narrabri mine expansion would become the dirtiest thermal coalmine in Australia.
The world’s scientists say all coal expansion must stop to avoid catastrophic levels of global heating, yet Whitehaven Coal have plans to double their coal production through five major new coal projects.
The Narrabri expansion will extend the life of Whitehaven’s existing Narrabri mine from 2031 to 2044 and result in 480 Mt CO2-e lifetime emissions.
Whitehaven’s existing coal mines are built on Gomeroi land. The Gomeroi people have been fighting Whitehaven for many years. In 2021, a group of Gomeroi elders released a statement calling for a stop to all new coal and gas projects, and expansions of existing projects, on Gomeroi country.
Here are 3 legal cases challenging Whitehaven’s coal expansion and our Government’s inaction on the climate crisis.
1. The Australian Climate Case
Right now, two Traditional Owners from the Torres Strait, are taking the Australian government to court for failing to take action to prevent climate change. With rising sea-levels already causing destruction and loss the Torres Strait is already feeling the impacts from the climate crisis.

2. Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action legal challenge to the massive Narrabri Coal mine extension
Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action (BSCA) are currently appealing an Independent Planning Commission (IPC) decision to approve the Narrabri coal mine expansion in the NSW Land and Environment Court.
Arguing that approving new fossil fuel projects and expansions is unreasonable given what we know about the threat of climate change and the climate impacts that we are already experiencing.

3. The Living Wonders Challenge
The Environment Council of Central Queensland (ECoCeQ) is also running a landmark climate legal intervention, requesting the Environment Minister reconsider the climate risks from many coal and gas proposals - including the Narrabri coal expansion.
This is the latest step in a legal intervention that has compelled the Minister to face and reconsider the climate risks from nearly all coal and gas proposals currently on her desk.
