Koalas not coal! Move Beyond Coal occupies JFE’s offices

Imagine wanting to bulldoze hundreds of hectares of endangered koala habitat for a dirty new coal mine. Well, that's exactly what Whitehaven are planning to do!

On 12 June our Sydney team revisited JFE's foyer for the third time in 2 weeks following up on our meeting request and calling on the company to rule out any involvement with Whitehaven Coal. We flyered staff and passers by. Police moved us on after about 40mins - we continued to hold our banners and signs on the footpath outside speaking to passers by.
Then on the 25 June, the legends in Brisbane were back at it again at #JFESteel offices for the forth time in four weeks! We’re still asking JFE for a meeting to discuss their potential partnership with Whitehaven Coal’s Blackwater mine.
New research demonstrated what we already knew- coal mining is having disastrous impacts on Australia’s iconic koalas. Existing and proposed new coal mines are clearing thousands of hectares of critically important koala habitat and pushing this iconic animal closer to extinction.
We understand from media reports that JFE Steel will make their decision about whether to buy a stake in the Blackwater mine in August. We've requested several meetings with JFE Steel, followed up multiple times and had no response. So now is the time to ramp up the public pressure. We are rolling out three mobilisations against JFE that day - in Brisbane, Sydney and Tokyo. Let's make this huge!
According to the federal environment department, there are 30+ proposed new coal mining projects in NSW and QLD awaiting federal government assessment from @tanyaplibersek . More than half of these coal projects would destroy koala habitat, including:
  • Whitehaven Coal’s Blackwater South coal project, which could affect up to 7000 hectares of koala habitat west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland
  • Whitehaven Coal’s Narrabri Project in NSW, which will clear nearly 500 hectares of koala habitat with around 235 hectares of this habitat being defined by Whitehaven as ‘core habitat’
JFE Steel- doing business with Whitehaven Coal is #RiskyBusiness ‼️
Join our big Koala die-in outside JFE Steel's Brisbane and Sydney offices, Thursday 18 July, to say: 'Save Our Koalas - Don't Fund Whitehaven Coal!'
