Whitehaven Coal is Blasting Our Future

Whitehaven Coal has been found guilty of four criminal offences for an incompetent mine blast that injured workers at a neighbouring mine. Whitehaven Coal overloaded the blast by more than 41,000kg of explosive. They knew they couldn't guarantee the safety of the blast but went ahead anyway, treating it as a "learning experience". In a damning indictment, the judge found the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has established beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant did not carry out the blasting in a competent manner.

Whitehaven Coal’s shocking track record of reckless and illegal behaviour has made it one of Australia’s most controversial companies. They are now seeking approval from the NSW government to expand the Maules Creek coal mine, over a decade after fierce community opposition and blockades. The resistance continues, and Whitehaven Coal are facing legal challenges in every single jurisdiction they operate in. This will not be the last time we attend a sentencing - we need to keep on the pressure to tell Whitehaven to stop blasting our future!

Join us on the day Whitehaven Coal are sentenced for their crimes, and tell them to stop blasting our future.
