Cairns rally - Respect Wangan & Jagalingou human rights!

The Wangan and Jagalingou - Traditional Owners of the land where Adani's coal mine is proposed - are calling on you to stand in solidarity with their call for Adani and the Qld Government to respect their human rights.

The Wangan and Jagalingou have called for an immediate stop work on Adani’s coal mine until an independent investigation is done on the groundwater impacts on the sacred Doongmabulla Springs. Adani Group knows that the significant drop in aquifer levels near the mine could have already caused irreversible damage to the Springs. But they are still extracting large volumes of groundwater. Every day matters. We need to take action now.

Doongmabulla means the place of many waters, an ancient spring system. Senior W&J cultural custodian, Adrian Burragubba says if the Springs are destroyed “It will be a catastrophe every bit as destructive to our culture, and as hurtful to our people, as the blasting of the caves at the Juukan Gorge.”

Wangan and Jagalingou people have said NO to Adani digging a coal mine on their homelands since 2012. Yet the Qld government continues to violate their human rights by allowing Adani Group to occupy and destroy land, water, and culture with impunity.

The Qld Government has the responsibility to protect the human rights and cultural heritage of the Wangan and Jagalingou. It has the power to put a stop to work on Adani’s coal mine until an independent investigation into groundwater impacts can happen, and until Wangan and Jagalingou have provided their free, prior, and informed consent for Adani’s coal mine.

Join your fellow Cairns residents at 5.30 - 6.15pm, Monday 30th August for a peaceful rally outside the Cairns office of Queensland Government MP Michael Healy.
