A year ago*, the Wangan & Jagalingou people commenced a ceremony at the edge of Adani’s Carmichael mine, after calling for a stop work order from the Queensland Government to protect their sacred Doongmabulla springs, their ochre grounds, and artefacts that are thousands of years old. The Government failed to act, so they did.
The one-year celebration of Waddananggu sovereignty camp has confirmed their rightful presence on Country and ongoing role as the cultural custodians. The anniversary of Waddananggu was a joyous time for Wangan & Jagalingou families, and for their supporters who made the trip to visit us Waddananggu Country.
The sacred fire is still burning, and we are still here.
*The one-year anniversary was held on the 26 Aug 2022.
