More than a year on from the invasion of Ukraine, it's been revealed that Australian coal company Tigers Realm Coal is STILL mining coal in Russia.
So, what does it mean?
It is morally reprehensible for any company to pursue new coal mining ventures in the midst of a climate crisis, but for an Australian company to pursue coal mining businesses that are funding Russia’s war is abhorrent.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused the price of coal to soar, and Australian miners cashed in. Tigers Realm has taken war profiteering from coal to shocking new lows.
Not to mention,Tigers Realm’s coal mining ventures in the Arctic have trampled the rights of Indigenous communities by encroaching on traditional hunting and fishing grounds and damaging fragile arctic environments the local Chukchi people depend on. Chukchi Indigenous landowners from the Altar tribal community of the Anadyr district have resisted Tiger's Realms coal mining plans for more than a decade.
The Australian Centre for International Justice (ACIJ) and Transparency International Australia (TIA) is calling on the Australian government to investigate the coal company’s activities and deny the company a permit that would allow it to continue to mine coal and evade sanctions.
